POWAY REAL ESTATE

Poway calls itself "The City in the Country," and it has retained much of its rustic charm through its transformation into a thriving bedroom community close to the City of San Diego and other areas of the county.

The area was originally recorded in the Mission San Diego de Alcala documents as "Paguay" The name was derived from the Indian word for the valley--Pau-wi--and translates as "the meeting of the valleys." The Paguay name appeared on maps as late as 1869. However, when the Postmaster General granted the area's application for a post office, he crossed out the name that had been suggested and substituted "Poway" fixing the current spelling once and for all. It was the first post office located between San Bernardino and San Diego.

Incorporated in 1980, Poway is known for its excellent schools and its many recreational opportunities. It has become a family-oriented community where residents and visitors alike enjoy golf, tennis, racquetball, swimming, volleyball, softball and more than 50 miles of trails for horseback riding, hiking, jogging, running and walking. The area still has many areas zoned for horses and homes are often on large lots giving the area a rustic feel.

Old Poway Park is the center of the community hosting a number of events each year including craft shows, farmer's markets and blacksmith demonstrations. The park is home to a vintage train that offers rides to visitors each weekend. Poway also boasts of an excellent performing arts center. The Poway Center for the Performing Arts Foundation is a 14-year old, non-profit organization that functions through a special partnership with the City of Poway and the Poway Unified School District. The Foundation offers a variety of professional performing arts events including concerts, dance performances, theater productions; and a children's theatre series which includes workshops and study guides.

Poway's climate is mild, and there is 140 acres of developed parkland, Lake Poway recreational area and nearly 3000 acres of dedicated public open space. Poway has carefully planned for balancing growth with the good life, offering an ideal place in which to prosper. Poway offers a wide variety of housing, shopping and recreation opportunities. It's the way California was meant to be. Poway is located just east of Interstate 15, about twenty miles north east of San Diego.
