La Mesa is an inland bedroom community east of San Diego along Interstate 8. Children attend schools in the La Mesa Spring Valley elementary school district (with a small exception attending the El Cajon Elementary School District) while teens attend in the Grossmont High School District.

La Mesa has a crime rate that falls on the low side of the suburban average. La Mesa was built for the middle class with most housing following a tract design with a spattering of some custom homes on the hills to take advantage of the views.

La Mesa is located 15-18 miles from downtown San Diego and is served by buses and trolleys as wells as two freeways. La Mesa has 14 parks, swimming pool, a public golf course, a fitness facility, a senior's center, a recreation center for children and adults, little league, soccer, a YMCA, Mission Trails Regional Park and is close to San Diego State University.
